Golden kitchen rules

The kitchen is an important part of the house. This is where all foods are prepared and when you think of food, you also want to think of cleanliness and high hygiene.

Here are a few rules that will help you maintain order in this very important room:
» Always wash your hands before handling anything in the kitchen.

» Make use of natural light in the kitchen, open the windows and let in as much light in as possible.

» As you open the windows for light, it is also good for good circulation of air. A stuffy kitchen is not safe to work in.

» Make labels for kitchen ware. This saves time while working because you know where everything is. (A place for everything and everything in its place.)

» Have lockable drawers for knives and out of reach of children. This helps in avoiding accidents.

» The floor should always be dry to avoid slips and falls.

» Your waste bins should be far from the cooking area to curb possibility of contamination.

» In big establishments, they have colour coded chopping boards but in the house you could have two, one for cutting raw meat and the other for fruits and vegetables.

» If storing your food in the refrigerator, store high proteins on the low shelves and vegetables on the upper shelves. This is to avoid cross contamination of foods.

» “Clean as you go” It is a good practice also to clean working areas as you cook.

» Turn off gas knobs and any electric appliances when you are done with them.
