More than ready- Sheila Ochwo

How did you discover you were expectant? Paying a gynecologist a visit was a foreign thought, but I did anyway. My menstrual cycle had become very irregular. When the nurse requested me to take a pregnancy test I thought she was joking. Then the doctor dropped the best news ever, and my joy was loud enough for everyone in the little homely office to share in. Now I know the ‘irregular period’ was spotting.

Was it planned?
I had given up planning, because of past experiences (long story for another day). So, as mentioned, it was a good surprise.

How many months along are you?
I prefer to go with my EDD date – which is in a months’ time. It makes it easier to pull through each day.

Have you been looking forward your EDD?
Oh yes! Very much so. First to have the baby then to get back to my shape (I’m a bit bulky). Every small neatly wrapped bundle in a mother’s arms can’t escape my attention. I have severally been drawn to asking mums how old their babies are. When they look up and meet my big belly, they melt into smiles and warmly tell me.

What has changed so far?
My shape and walking style have tremendously changed.

Eating habits?
Unlike my first pregnancy, I am eating a lot more, which I am happy about. The strange liking for fried chicken is quite weird.

Social life?
There is no better thing than being in the house. I would pay a jet just to beat traffic. Weekends are home days. But I catch up a lot on the phone. I have a new set of friends with whom we talk about the same thing (pregnancy) over and over – and each of us is a ‘doctor’.

Dressing?
My wardrobe is chocker-block with trendy maternity wear but every time I open it I quietly scream ‘I need more tops!’ What was fitting last week doesn’t any more. A friend has advised that I reduce my investing in it, saying the remaining one month is not worth the expense and trouble.

Do you like the changes?
I am enjoying the VIP treatment. I remembered being ushered to the front of a long winding queue during the last elections. However the physical changes are a bit scary. I can no longer see my feet when I’m standing upright. The muscle pulls, heart burns and insomnia are things I’d be happy to leave behind come EDD.

Have you had an embarrassing moment so far?
Not one that I can remember. I think it is other people who get embraced on my behalf. They often say, ‘It’s because she is expectant.’ – smiling.

What is your favorite bit about this pregnancy?
That it’s not the first one, which relaxes me a bit. Then, there is a little ready brother who is equally anxiously waiting. He keeps hugging my belly praying, blessing and cooing the baby to sleep.

Have you had any scares?
Of course, delivery. This is when all stories, myths and experiences come alive. I had pre-eclampsia during my last pregnancy through to post delivery. It is my worst nightmare. I have however prayed against a recurrence and there are all indicators that it will not happen.

What plans do you have for the baby?
A very warm welcome, ensuring there are enough warm clothes since we’ll be getting into a cold season. School, insurance, saving plans will be for later.

Something interesting:
My hubby watches me like a hawk. He wants it to go ALL RIGHT.
