Celebrating birth 24

My labor started on 5th May 2009 at night. I went to my doctor’s clinic on the 6th May and he told me I was 3 cm dilated and I needed to check myself into hospital. After that clinic, I went to the office to hand over and from there I went to the hospital, I was admitted immediately, allocated a mid-wife before the doctor came.

The mid-wife examined me and I was 4 cm dilated, as I waited for my doctor, my birth partner ( Joy Okello) came and at that time my pains were a bit intense, she took me through the breathing process, I would have not done without her.

At about 3.30.pm, my doctor came and broke my water and induced me that’s when the role of a birth partner came in. I was in intense labour from 3.30 to 8.38 pm, I was given the laughing gas to make things go better and it didn’t help me during the pain. I became very very hostile but I was never screaming. They gave me pain relievers from laughing gas to injections but they didn’t help. I t was so painful and I started screaming asking for an epidural but my doctor refused so I had to go it through the natural way.

They examined me again and I was 8cm dilated, I felt like pushing but I was told not to. At about 8pm, I went to the delivery room and that’s where my pains stopped, when I felt like pushing, I pushed due to maternal distress I pushed and my baby was not moving and he was in distress and the baby had to be vacuumed out at 8.38, baby Shane Muthui was born, thanks to Joy Okello and my doctor.

The baby was taken to the nursery by his proud father George and my dad and 2 brothers came to see me in the delivery room as I recovered.  I thank my family, my fiancé and Joy and all my workmates and Njoki for all the love and support.
