First Word 37

How was your pregnancy experience?’ I asked a gentleman.’ Hey. I don’t know. I can’t remember-I was detached,’ he said, ‘Don’t look at me that way. I’m not an irresponsible man,’ he laughs, ‘No one complained. It’s allowed in the African setting.’ Some more chuckle .. .’But anyway,’ now with a serious face, ‘I sure took care of her. Only that in the African setting, we don’t make these things so loud, lest my clan comes for my neck.’

‘I made dinner when it looked like she needed a break, went with her for ante-natal care-sometimes wondering what the heck was going on in there. I overhauled my saving habits to not only take care of the maternity expenses but to be the rich dad; all of a sudden every dime counted. I noticed every pregnant woman in the streets and hoped they were being accorded the best treatment wherever they went. Anxiety was part and parcel of me, especially when I thought about the EDD, or just whether the baby really was fine .. .’

He went on to explain that being a man of faith settled his qualms. ‘When things are beyond you, there is comfort in the fact that the Mighty One up there has the final word-a good one for that matter. That is what I held onto, unswervingly. And I looked forward to a feisty strong chap or the sweetest daddy’s gal on earth. You know, there is no blessing like a child who is receptive of all of Dad’s guidance, admonitions, encouragement, games, jokes, support, provision, insight and buddy-ship!’

Needless to say, all that has come to pass. He is now Daddy. He smiled, ‘I am compelled to say being a “pregnant” man is one of the most empowering experiences. Happy expectations plus panicky moments, and world class dreams.’ ‘So do you plan to be expectant again?’ I asked. ‘Oh no no no …. One is enough!’ he concluded the discussion in a huff.

Just thought I should share with you some pregnant moments in a pregnant man’s jacket.
Happy pregnancy!
