Stabs in the back

Back pain, a common complaint during pregnancy, can some limes feel like stabs in the back, which put most If not all of your activities—at a hall. The causes of back pain include the following:

o Your hormones are relaxing the muscles and ligaments throughout your body including those in the back thus the discomfort,
o Your center of gravity moves forward as your uterus and baby grow, causing your posture to change,
o Your developing pregnancy and baby create additional weight that your back must support,
o Poor posture, excessive standing, and bending over can set off or increase back pain,
o Stress usually finds the weak spot in the body.
With the changes in your pelvic area, you may experience an increase in back pain during stressful periods of your pregnancy.

Easing the Stabs
Good posture and Fitness. Tuck your buttocks under, pull your shoulders back and downward, and stand tall. Exercise regularly with your doctor’s guidance.

Sit and stand carefully. Sit with your feet slightly lifted. Choose a chair that supports your back or place a small pillow behind your lower back. Change positions often, and avoid standing for long periods. If you must stand, rest one foot on a low step stool.

Sleep on your side. Not your back. Keep one or both knees bent. It may also help to place one pillow between your knees and another under your abdomen, or use a full-length body pillow.

Lift properly. When lifting light things, squat down and lift with your legs. Do not bend at the waist or lift with your back. Know your limits, that Is. ask for help when you need it.

Your Attire. Wear low-heeled shoes with good arch support. Wear maternity pants with a low, supportive waistband.

Heat, cold or a back rub. Soak in a warm bathtub or place a hot pad. Some women find relief by using ice packs instead. Rubbing your back may help as welt. You can ask someone to rub your back for you.

Consult with your doctor before taking any medication lo treat your back pain.
