Shy Moments 2

My five-year old daughter asked me why my stomach was growing so big, and I told her that I was going to have a baby soon and the growing baby was filling my stomach. A few weeks later just around my due date I was entertaining some guests when she asked me, ‘Mummy, will the baby come out today?’ Absentmindedly I replied, ‘Maybe.’ Minutes later she brought in a wash basin and placed it in front of me. ‘What’s that for?’ I asked her. ‘Mummy, when your stomach bursts, it will be a big burst and the baby will fall in this basin.’

College baby

During one of my low moments my niece who is in class one asked me why I was looking sad. ‘I am going to have a baby. Sweetie,’ I told her. She was the first one in the family to hear about it, as I had not revealed my unplanned pregnancy to my sister and her husband. I was living with them and I knew she would blow her top once she learned about it as they were paying for my college. We were having supper later that evening when my niece suddenly said, ‘I want to go to college when I grow up. ‘Why do you want to go to college, mum,’ asked her Dad. ‘When you go to college you get a baby.’ Then she looked at me!

Baby space

When I explained to my baby nephew that my tummy was large because I had a child in there, he asked me not to eat too much because the baby would not have enough space.

‘Mukonyo

As a result of pregnancy, my navel which has a stamp clearly caused a protrusion on any dress I wore. One day while in the kitchen my seven-year-old son and his friends were watching cartoons on TV when I heard him shout, ‘the baby in mom’s stomach watches TV through her mukonyo (the navel).’They all burst into heartful laughter.

Like a balloon

‘Mum, I know why your stomach is big!’ my five-year-old son recently declared. I was amused by the knowledgeable look on his face and wanted to share in his new revelation. ‘Ok, tell me…’ I urged him on. ‘It is because daddy has been blowing air into your mouth, like a balloon. I saw him!’ he concluded. It later transpired that he had sneaked into our bedroom the night before and seen us kissing.

Spoons for the baby

I went shopping in a supermarket with my six-year-old son. He is fond of picking up items and I was therefore not surprised when he ran off from the paying counter and came back with two small spoons from the shelves. ‘Dad, we don’t need those,’ I told him softly. ‘It’s not for you!’ he shouted, ‘it’s for the baby in your stomach I know he has been eating with his hands…’ he finished knowingly. ‘You ***!’ I thought to myself when the cashier and her attendant burst into laughter.
