Scars

A scar is a blemish, a mark on the skin. It occurs when the skin repairs wounds that have been caused by accidents, disease or surgery.

Unavoidable
Scars are a sign that one has lived, is living. A non active person is not bound to get scars. The fact is that you cannot entirely avoid scars. They are a sign that you have an active life. Various activities will leave a tear, a mark on your skin. Most of these marks are left because we have little or no control over them.

Where scars form
Scars form on the skin. The skin is a seamless organ, like a fine piece of cloth cloaking valuable assets. Any burn, injury, surgery or other trauma to it can cause the formation of scar tissue that can be downright ugly. Just like a fine piece of cloth will show a difference if impacted by a tear, so does your skin. If a scar is small or is in a body part that is easy to conceal, then it is easy to live with.

How scarring happens
A scar will form naturally, after an injury. It is part of the healing process. However, how your skin scars is influenced by several factors. The depth and size of the wound, the location of the injury, your age, sex and heredity will affect how your skin reacts and how it heals.

Types of scars
Acne: If you have suffered from severe acne, you most probably still have the scars to prove it. The best way to deal with acne is to get treatment soon after the acne appears. The goal is to prevent further severe acne and more scarring.

Striae: Commonly referred to as stretch marks. They appear mostly on the breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks and abdomen. Stretch marks become whitish and scar like in appearance over time. They may be slightly depressed and have a different texture than normal skin.

Contracture scars: If your skin has been burned, you may have a contracture scar, which causes tightening of skin that can impair your ability to move.

Atrophic scars: They commonly occur after an acute varicella (chicken pox) infection or moderate to severe cystic acne.

Good news
Generally, no one likes scars. We all want a way to remove them. If the scar is hideous you want to hide it under clothing. The good news is that there are ways that can help reduce scar size and appearance.
