Passing your EDD – Should it worry you?

I passed my EDD by nine days. My boyfriend was to be my birth partner but he freaked out on the material day and my mum became my birth partner.

My mother arrived when I was being induced and she decided to stay with me. We chatted for a while but when the pain increased, I stopped talking and she decided to leave me alone.

The father of my baby came but left at around 11.00 p.m. When I was left alone, the pain began getting intense and at 1.00 a.m. I called my mother and she came immediately accompanied by my sister and brother. Unfortunately, my siblings were not allowed inside the labour ward. My mother rubbed my back from 2.00am up to the time I delivered. At one point I had to tell her, ‘Mum you are sleeping and I am in pain. Please wake up,’ as she dozed on the job. I did not expect my mum to be my birth partner but she was the best and I love her so much for being there.

My EDD was 12th June and I gave birth to my daughter Lexxy Mwendwa on 21st June at 41 weeks. I had to be induced because the baby was not coming. I experienced serious cramps but no labour pains. I would go to the hospital for clinics and the doctor would tell me that I might deliver before my next visit. Come the next visit, I would still not have delivered. At 38 weeks, my baby weighed 3.1 kilograms in the womb. The doctor advised me to check in at the hospital on 20th June for induction. I checked in, was given a bed and relaxed for two hours before being induced at around 5:00pm. I gave birth the following day at 6:25am. She weighed 4.1 kilograms and she was the biggest baby in the nursery.

Although she was a big baby, I am glad it was a normal delivery. Pushing was not easy but thank God I had a very kind nurse. I think if it were not for that nurse, I would have gone for a C-section. She encouraged me that I would be able to do it until I succeeded. I did not take long in the delivery room and the actual delivery was not as painful as the labour.

Looking back at my anxieties after passing my EDD, now I know that it should not worry a pregnant woman as long as she is being monitored by an experienced healthcare provider.
