Just Wig it

One of the commonest complaints among mums-to-be is absolute tiredness. If sitting in the salon for hours getting a hairdo IS not your cup of tea, a wig can come in handy for an instant, hassle free hairstyle. Wigs are either made from human hair or synthetic material. Human hair wigs have a more natural look and can be styled and coloured. In addition, they need a lot of care and are more expensive.

Most of the good quality synthetic wigs are identical to human hair wigs, but are cheaper and do not need much care and maintenance. They can easily get damaged when heat styled, for example, using hair dryers or curling irons. Just like your hair, the wigs should be cleaned with shampoo, conditioned and dried to preserve the natural look and feel.

Keeping it chic                                                                                                                                         Washing
How often you wash your wig depends on how frequently you wear it. Generally, a wig should be washed after every 6 – 8 wearings in warm climates or after every 12 -15 wearings in cooler ones.

  • Soak wig in a mixture of mild shampoo and conditioner; use lukewarm water
  • Work the shampoo through the hair from top to bottom and rinse

Applying conditioner

  • Rinse with warm water
  • Gently blot hair with a towel
  • Comb wet hair from the bottom to the top
  • Use gentle downward strokes one section at a time

Drying

  • Let the wig air-dry on a clean, dry towel or a mannequin.
  • Do not let it dry near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
  • Never use blow dryers or other heat appliances on synthetic wigs.
  • Be sure not to comb, brush or pick a wet wig unless you are completely restyling it.
  • As the wig dries, shake it out periodically to promote speed drying. Once fully dry, style normally.

Storing it

Wigs should be stored on a wig stand or a mannequin when it is not used so that the shape is properly preserved.

  • Smoothen out straight hair or fluff curls with a wire brush or pick.
  • Cover it with a hair net that holds the style without matting.
  • Avoid leaving your wig near heat, humidity(showers), or dusty areas.

Don’t neglect your hair while your hair is hidden under the wig, don’t forget to care for it. Wash your hair as usual (at least once every two weeks). Moisturize your hair and scalp too-as dryness can ultimately lead to hair breakage.
