Post-partum Depression

It is not clear how post-partum depression starts although certain circumstances are suspected to precipitate it. Such situations include unwanted or accidental pregnancy delayed labour prolonged labour an emergency Cs or delivery complications.
Some of the symptoms are:

  • Sadness and frequent crying
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Decreased interest in sex
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Feelings of rejection
  • Lack of pleasure or interest in activities that once gave joy
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Weight loss
  • Agitation or anxiety

Ensure that you see a doctor in case of any of the following;

  • Mood swings or depression for more than a few days after child birth
  • Feelings of frustration when coping with daily activities for more than a few days after the birth of your baby
  • Strong feelings of anger or depression 1-2 months after delivery.
