Uncrown your baby of dandruff

Research shows that the hormones passed on from the mother to the baby at the end of her pregnancy over-stimulate the baby’s oil-producing glands resulting in ‘cradle cap’. The condition is characterized by a dry, flaky, scalp or a thick, yellow and scaly scalp. The scales may appear cracked or even greasy. While the condition looks unsightly, it’s not harmful to your baby.

Cradle cap typically occurs in the first three months and clears up within six to 12 months—although some babies may have it for several years.

It is important to note that this condition is not caused by poor hygiene or allergies, neither is it contagious, though if it gets severe, it might itch.

Treatment
Generally, mild cradle cap does not need any treatment since it will clear up on its own. However, if it gets to the itchy point, the following simple home remedies should do the trick. Remember to consult your doctor before buying any over the counter treatments or anti-dandruff shampoos. Furthermore, seek expert advice if the condition is severe and if it spreads to other parts of the body.

Simple home treatment
Use baby shampoo at least twice in a week and gently massage the scalp with a soft cloth.

If the condition persists, use natural oils like olive oil to loosen the dry flakes and leave it on for about 15 minutes. Then gently comb out the flakes with a soft bristled brush or with a fine toothed comb.

Finish up by using baby shampoo to help remove the oil and rinse with water. Once the condition clears up, it is unlikely to recur. A gentle wash two or three times a week, with baby shampoo is recommended to maintain good grooming.
