11 Baby hush-hush tips
Soothing your baby can be a nerve-wrecking experience, especially if you are a first time mum. Here are some tried and tested ideas to calm your baby:
- Attend to your baby as soon as they start crying as this makes the feel safe and loved. If you leave her alone crying, she will feel insecure and confused.
- Give your baby a head-to-toe checkup. Check if her diaper needs changing, whether she is hungry, if she needs to be burped or if she is feeling cold.
- Play some relaxing music, similar to what you may have played when she was still in the womb.
- Give her brightly colored toys, hard rattles, mobiles that can distract her and calm her.
- Have some noise in the background, for instance, sound from radio or television. It creates a distraction for her to stop crying.
- Cuddle your baby and rock her back and fourth. Babies love this as it transports them back to the safety and movement of being inside the amniotic sac.
- Go for a drive. The motion of a car often lulls a baby to sleep.
- Keep your cool and talk to your baby calmly. If you become stressed, she may pick up your tension and the situation may worsen.
- Your baby loves the sound of your voice. So singing to her the good old lullabies can definitely do the trick.
- Put her in a stroller and go for a walk since some babies like to watch what is going on around them.
- If the baby has lost his/her umbilical cord, try a warm, relaxing bath.
