Unexpected Pregnancy – Visitor in the Lonely Desert

Facing Unexpected Pregnancy

When you are lonely, rejected, looking for a way forward, who do you turn to?

If you’re pregnant unexpectedly, you know where you’ve come from, how you got into this situation, but you don’t know where you’re going. You need a voice, someone or something to guide you in your next step.

Hagar was in such a place. Genesis 16 tells the story of Hagar’s first separation from Abram’s camp. Some of the rejection Hagar had actually brought on herself by despising her mistress Sarai when she realized she was pregnant with Abram’s child. That didn’t take away the reality of her pain as she in turn was mistreated by Sarai, so she fled and found herself alone by a spring in the desert.

In her desperate, lonely state, Hagar had a visitor. When she was asked by the angel, “Where have you come from and where are you going?” she only answered the first part. She didn’t know where she was going. Hagar was blessed to have an angel appear to her and give her direction that would be in her best interests.

Too often we turn to easy answers, a quick fix that might be detrimental to our overall wellbeing. Hagar was given a way forward that would impact generations. She was told to return and submit to her mistress. Not an easy instruction at all! Who wants to submit when we feel we have been wronged or mislead?! In a crisis pregnancy situation, one of the hardest things a young woman can do is tell her parents. They are the ones who probably gave her “the talk” about men and being careful as she was growing up.

Here she is now, pregnant, having to swallow her pride and admit that she has not done what her parents told her to do. However, many parents are silent on issues of intimacy and promiscuity, leaving it as an unspoken expectation that unwanted pregnancy will not be part of their unmarried child’s life. Many young people therefore get information on these issues from their peers, the internet, and various other forms of media. If they were however, fortunate enough to have parents who did at least try to teach on the subject, they are in a real bind.

Do I admit I did wrong, or do I cover up my mistake and flush, getting it over and done with so I can go on with my life? Maybe you won’t be visited by an angel, but my prayer is that you WILL hear from the Lord. Submit to your family, go back to them and have this child. There is a purpose for the life that has begun inside you, a purpose that may not be clear right now.

Whether you raise the child yourself or choose to give the baby for adoption, your infant will live to fulfill his or her purpose. When I look at my grandchildren today and realize they would not exist if I had flushed my crisis pregnancy, I’m brought to my knees.

An entire generation would have been wiped out, and for what? For my convenience? To save face?

Think about it …
