Crisis Pregnancy and Fear – What Next?

Your crisis pregnancy has thrown you into a pit of despair…. All your support systems seem to have failed you….. Where can you turn? What can you do?

There is never an easy answer for any girl or woman with a crisis pregnancy. This is a “mistake” that seems to have dire consequences. You’re a student, a single mother, a working woman on an upwardly-mobile career path, jobless or even that mother who hadn’t planned for this extra pregnancy in the family. No matter your circumstances, there is one common thing that’s running throughout all these scenarios– fear of the unknown ahead of you.

This fear can paralyse you to the point you just want to die. To end it all and to have a complete finality to the situation. Some ladies with crisis pregnancies have actually thought their situation was so bad and tried to commit suicide. Thankfully, most fail. The innate desire to live far outweighs the need to end it all. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem – you are temporarily faced with a situation that seems hopeless. The next morning however, the sun does rise, and somehow so does your emotional outlook.

What is a healthier way to cope with your fear?
First of all, face it.

Look your fear straight in the eye and say, you know what, as long as I have breath, I can do something about this problem. I am bigger than it and I will overcome it. What is fear, anyway? My favourite acronym: False Evidence Appearing Real. So many of our fears never actually materialize. “Oh, my mother (or my dad) will kill me when they find out!” Really?! Will they actually take out a weapon and murder you? Really?! My boyfriend has said, “It’s not mine, it’s your problem,” so I’m all alone! Says who?! Are you really ‘all alone’? Really?! “My employer will force me to quit and I’ll be penniless!” Are you sure?! Is this the only employer in the entire universe? Really?!

Jesus tells us in Mathew 6 not to worry about tomorrow. If God feeds the sparrow, will He not also feed you, or clothe you? Worrying about tomorrow doesn’t change anything, it only makes matters worse as we become anxious. We start to focus on what is possibly ahead, not what is actually at hand. What may happen tomorrow is only in my imagination. It is unknown. It hasn’t happened yet, so why fret about it?

Second, don’t let fear push you into something you will regret later.

I’ve talked with too many people who later wish they had taken a different path from the one they chose in a moment of crisis. Take a deep breath, exhale, and ask yourself, where am I REALLY and what options do I have. Seek godly advice and counsel. Talk about your situation with someone you know will listen and who cares. Just sharing contributes a great deal towards thinking differently about the situation. You will be glad you did.

Third, fear of what is ahead and what is unknown is a scheme the devil uses to cheat people into thinking they have no options.

Do you want the devil to be in control of your life, or do you want to hear what the Lord has to say to you? Do you want to already be afraid of what you do not know and what you cannot see or do you want to be secure in the knowledge that the Lord is in control of your life? Scripture that always comes to my mind when I’m stressed is, “I am with you, I will not leave your or forsake you.” Look at Joshua 1: Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. He is with you, so lean on Him, let Him guide you through the crisis, and you will come out stronger at the other end.
