Golden containers

For a savoury site

I am writing this article after my wife and I bade kwaheri to one of our good friends. No, she is not going abroad. But the sheer fact that she is leaving Nairobi for Mombasa and we shall not see much of each other often, just makes my girl sad.

With the hustle and bustle of moving, we agree that we should both go to her place and help her pack. When we get to her house, my wife heads straight for the kitchen because she wants to keep some crockery Joy owns, as souvenirs. Imani is known to be impeccable – always very neat and orderly. So much that it would get to the girl’s nerves, my wife included.

As they go about rummaging through kitchen ware, I hear my missus oohing and aahing at the sight of everything she comes across. But what really catches my eye too are her packing boxes, or else known as lunch boxes. She never throws them away once the contents are finished. She therefore has many stacked high up.

In my house, my wife has plastic bags, which I find quite messy. So, when I see her appreciation for the containers, a light bulb comes on in my head. And it makes our talk on this issue.

Packing containers
These are generally what you use in the house to store left-over food, carrying lunch for the kids or yourself or even when giving away some food after a party. In such circumstances, we are left wondering how and where to pack that food that has stew or even soup and this is where most of us turn to plastic bags, which are so unhygienic, cannot be recycled, are uneconomical and could tear easily.

My whole idea is, don’t throw away those containers when you are done with them. Wash them with warm water and soap to remove the fat and use them to pack your meals.

They are safe to carry around as they have lids, and you get to use them over and over.

The other alternative is buying them from the shops. They are found in most supermarkets or shops that sell kitchenware all at very good prices. Another advantage about purchasing them is the variety available. They are in various sizes, shapes and colours too.

These containers could be made from plastic or stainless steel, so you are really spoilt for choice. Next time you think of buying plastic bags to pack your food, head for the utensils’ section at your supermarket.

Oh and yes! You bet we got so much from our pal’s house, who has since left for Mombasa. Consequently, our kitchen is more orderly.
