Adoption – Should I Should I Not?

I was worried for a long time that I was not qualified to parent a little girl……….

I am a single young woman. I have decided to adopt a lovely little girl. I made that decision four years ago. But my baby isn’t home yet. Why? Because I am part of a society that believes that adoption is a last and final resort where married couples have tried and failed to have children of their own! And for a long time I have worried that I don’t qualify at all!

I write this today because I am going forward anyway. I am going to get my own little angel and co-partner with God to love and raise her.

No, I do not have a deep profound reason for choosing adoption. I have made this choice because I believe that I can provide a stable and loving home for a child. I feel that this is the way in which God wants me to trust him at this point in my life. Nothing more, nothing less. My reasons are based on my faith. Otherwise I would not do this. It is God who has finally brought me to this place where I am convinced that this adoption would be an act of obedience. Yes, I believe that first and foremost, it is God’s design that children be raised by two parents in a traditional family setting. I also believe that it is God, the father of the fatherless, who places the lonely in families.

Yes, my child will be my own child. Yes, I hope very much to fall in love and get married one day. No, I am not lonely and disillusioned. No, I am not a feminist or any of that stuff. Until now, I have had only very fulfilling and balanced relationships with the men in my life i.e. my dad and brother. Though I have had my share of disappointments, I have never had my heart broken. At least not in that terrible I-am-a-broken-person-trying-to-make-myself-whole-again way.

My point is that I am a regular woman who feels that this, despite being so widely frowned upon, is the right thing for me to do. I wish with all my heart that more people, married and single, old and young, were favourably disposed towards adoption. Our orphanages would be way less crowded, our homes filled with much more laughter and we would indeed be making the world a better place in a very personal and effective way.

No, adoption is not for everyone. There are a million other ways to better the world. But if you are reading this, and you have been had that tug in your heart to take the plunge, get on your knees and ask the Lord to have his way and you will be amazed at the things he will place upon your heart.
