For the baby’s zzzz…..

Sleep is very important to a child’s health and well-being. And more so, creating a sleeping comfort zone for your baby is crucial in getting the required quality sleep that his body needs, to function as it should.

Apart from providing a nice room that has dim lights, a stable bed and clean and soft bedding, it is worth noting that a good mattress greatly contributes to quality sleep.

A good baby mattress should:

• Distribute pressure evenly across the body to help in blood circulation. When blood circulation is achieved, sleep interruptions are not experienced making your baby sleep throughout the night,

• Conform to the spine’s natural curve and keeps your baby’s spine in alignment when you lay him down. An ideal mattress conforms to the shape of the body shape, thus giving support to the spinal cord without causing high pressure points between the mattress and the baby’s body,

• Be made of natural material. Natural fibres have minimal allergic reactions to the baby’s sensitive skin,

• Have a perforated structure to allow ventilation and reduce sweating. Perforation helps in air circulation.

• Have a removable cover that is easily washable and durable.

Pillows

A quality firm pillow is an important accessory for a baby’s bed as it largely contributes to his comfort when sleeping.

A good pillow requires a cover that will cause no irritation to the baby’s skin, and that is mostly made of natural fabric such as cotton or linen. Synthetic materials will not only cause skin irritation, but they also fail to absorb sweat produced while sleeping thus causing discomfort.

A quality pillow also ensures proper positioning of the baby’s head and neck by distributing equal pressure to the head from all sides. This helps to avoid distorted head shapes and neck pains as the baby grows up.

A pillow is important in slightly inclining your baby’s head thus helping in respiration. This prevents snoring especially if he has a stuffy nose.
